Musculoskeletal Therapy is still a very new branch of physical medicine. Many people often ask, what exactly is the difference between Remedial Massage and Musculoskeletal Therapy? Remedial Massage is only one component of Musculoskeletal Therapy. Musculoskeletal Therapists, or MST’s, are qualified Remedial Massage Therapists, however they also treat similar conditions seen by other branches of physical medicine like physiotherapy and osteopathy.
Musculoskeletal Therapy, not unlike Remedial Massage, is a very hands-on approach to the treatment of pain and dysfunction within the muscular and fascial systems, however also treats the skeletal and neurological components. Both Remedial Massage and Musculoskeletal Therapy manage acute and chronic occupational, degenerative, sports related and general everyday musculoskeletal dysfunctions, however, MST’s approach assessment and treatment in a more specialized and thorough way.
Musculoskeletal Therapy is an integrated approach. Therapists not only provide extensive soft tissue, joint and neurological hands on treatment, but also work to incorporate health and fitness advice, exercise prescription and injury prevention strategies into treatment.
Thorough History and Assessment
Your initial Musculoskeletal Therapy session will include a thorough health history, physical examination and musculoskeletal testing, to not only assess the presenting complaint, but also look for associated dysfunctions and identify contributing or compensatory factors. The therapist will be looking at the client’s posture and movement patterns and will discuss any occupational and environmental elements which may be causing or aggravating the issue. The foundation of Musculoskeletal Therapy is to take a holistic approach- meaning we are looking for the cause, not just the symptom.
More Than “Just a Massage”
Remedial Massage and Deep Tissue techniques form the basis of the soft tissue treatment, however, Musculoskeletal Therapists are equipped with a more thorough soft tissue skillset and may incorporate additional techniques such as, Muscle Energy, Myofascial Release and Positional Release Techniques.
Not only are MST’s soft tissue experts, but they are also qualified to apply other instrumented treatment methods to more thoroughly address your complaint. Where indicated therapists will apply joint and neurological mobilization, Myofacial Dry Needling, Cupping Therapy and hot/cold thermal treatments to restore normal function.Musculoskeletal Therapists take an integrated holistic approach. They treat the entire body, not just a symptom. It’s not about a “quick fix”, but instead a long term approach to correcting postural, occupational, environmental and movement imbalances. Our Musculoskeletal Therapists will work with you to incorporate exercise prescription and injury rehabilitation into your treatment plan to prevent injury recurrence and maintain optimum physical health.
Degree Vs Diploma
As well as holding a Diploma of Remedial Massage, all Musculoskeletal Therapists hold Bachelor Health Science Musculoskeletal Therapy. As part of maintaining registration with a professional board in order to practice in Australia- MST’s are required to participate in 30-40 hours of accredited professional development per year. As Musculoskeletal Therapy is an evidence based practice, this ensures therapists are continually maintaining and extending their professional knowledge base and incorporating only the most up-to-date skills into their treatment programs.
